Roofers in Owens Cross Roads

Owens Cross Roads sits in the Big Cove valley southeast of Huntsville on Hwy 431, with Green Mountain on one side and Keel Mountain on the other, and that geography matters for a roof: wind comes down off the ridges faster than it moves across the valley floor in Huntsville. We inspect, repair and replace Owens Cross Roads roofs with written line-item pricing, and typical repairs run $300 to $1,800.

The town has two kinds of houses. The newer subdivisions built out from Hampton Cove since 2005 have steep architectural shingle roofs that are reaching 10 to 20 years. The older homes along Old Hwy 431 and the county roads toward the Flint River are 1960s to 1990s ranches and farmhouses on larger lots, several with metal roofs.

Valley and mountain exposure

Air coming over Green Mountain and Keel Mountain accelerates on the downslope, so the valley side of a roof that faces the ridge takes gusts well above what the weather station in Huntsville records. We see it as lifted tabs along one slope while the rest of the roof is fine, and as ridge cap pieces in the gutter after a front that did no damage in the city.

The valley also holds moisture. Mornings are foggy, north slopes stay damp, and algae streaks darken shingles faster here than on the open ground in Harvest. That is cosmetic until the granules go with it. Algae-resistant shingles cost a little more and are worth it on a north-facing slope in the Big Cove valley, and we spec them on replacements here unless you tell us not to.

Hail reaches the valley less often than the open ground north of Huntsville, but when a cell comes over Green Mountain it drops everything at once. After any hail event we chalk and count hits per test square and photograph the gutters and vent caps so the file is ready if a claim makes sense.

On replacements we spec six nails per shingle and a 130 mph shingle on every slope facing a mountain, and we flash the valleys with metal and ice and water shield because the valleys on these steep roofs move a lot of water in a short time. Owens Cross Roads homes sell steadily to Hampton Cove buyers moving up and Arsenal families moving in, so a photo-documented inspection is often the first thing we are asked for.

Trees are part of the deal in the valley. The newer subdivisions were cut out of hardwood, and the lots that kept their oaks and hickories have limbs over the roof and leaves in the valleys every fall. A clogged valley on a steep roof backs water up under the shingles in the first heavy rain. We clear the valleys and the gutters when we are up there and tell you which limbs to have taken back.

The older homes along the county roads have their own list: tarred-over chimney flashing, 1980s skylights with failed seals that run $300 to $800 to reflash, and exposed-fastener metal porch roofs that need a screw-and-seal. Those roofs often have better decking than the newer ones, built with thicker plywood or plank, and they are good candidates for metal when a replacement comes due.

Services in Owens Cross Roads

Roof inspections with a written photo report for buyers, sellers and anyone planning ahead, $150 to $300. Roof repair for leaks, flashing, pipe boots and wind damage, typically one visit. Roof replacement on the steep subdivision roofs, where a 2,400 square foot two-story at 20 to 26 squares runs $9,000 to $15,000 in architectural shingles. Storm documentation and tarping. Metal roofing on the older homes and outbuildings.

Owens Cross Roads is about 20 minutes from our Huntsville base down Hwy 431. No travel charge. We schedule valley visits early in the day in spring, because the storms that build over the mountains in the afternoon arrive here before they reach Huntsville.
